This U.S lady living in Spain, on her U.S tax return 2023 made, what says is a minor error, whiich she corrected by mailing a correction letter to the irs shortly thereafter. Today. she received her fith letter from the irs, asking for another 60 days to obtain the info they need...she does,nt need to do anything right now.....on the 4th letter she called the irs and was told they,d resolve it and that she shouln,t worry, no penalties are considered...but this lady is so worried...5 letters..??..Based on your experience..what should all this mean?

I don't have the rules handy, and without the notice number I cannot be certain, but in essence the IRS is obligated to assess information provided within a certain SLAs. When they cannot meet that SLA they are required to notify the taxpayer that they require additional time.

Snail mail gets "received" and then sits in a very big pile for a very long time before it gets processed. I would guess most of these letters were sent out automatically every 60 days until it gets processed.

In essence all this means is that the IRS is overwhelmed by paperwork. But given current state of affairs there, that should come as no suprise.
