We have to move soon and are considering the island Evia/Chalkida. We would like to be fairly near an airport and in touch with a city but still removed enough to feel we are living well away from hustle and bustle. We have 5 cats and 2 dogs and have been told Evia may suit our lifestyle. We do not want to live near high traffic zones for pet safety reasons and enjoy being quite removed although we want to be able to participate within a community at times.

One thing I loathe is strong winds. We currently live in Cyprus and have been blown to pieces from March 1st and it hardly ever seems to stop this year. I am aware the Cycladic islands are very windy. Are all the islands pretty windy? We wish to live near the water and do not know how possible it is to rent a house with a pool or if it is even necessary.

Another thing we are considering is the smog / pollution level. I have quite bad allergies and need clean air. Is Evia / Chalkida far enough away from Athens to be considered clean?

In Sept / Oct I will be going over to check out a few places and would really love some suggestions as to the best places for us to live.

Our main factors are:
Wind
Possible rural environment but still close enough to get supplies (supermarket within 20 minutes)
Clean Air
Nice beaches
Kind community
Fairly close to Athens or a major airport

Many thanks for any info you can offer.

where to live in greece

there is lots of choice for you here,I live in athens but have built a house 1 hour and 20 minutes away from athens airport on the corinthos bay near to loutraki, which is a stunning area, very clean air, an abundance of local food at good prices, mountains and sea.we drink the mountain water, buy non pesticided food,I think someone could live to be 100 around this area in good condition,we buy goats milk where the goats are herded around the mountains,no antibiotics or hormones in the milk,we also buy healthy meat, easy to get to doctors, athens, loutraki or megara, megara is where socratese or plato lived for a time.My husband is miffed that he cannot retire early and go to live full time at our house which is at Schinos near loutraki and old corinthos, some people say that they dont need their tablets when they stay in this area,no pollution and it is set in a valley so not too windy.Access to all medical care, you can check the area out on utube.

It is mostly greeks with second homes,a few non greeks have houses there and live in athens or I know a couple, she is english with greek husband, they had an english school in athens then retired to their house at schinos,it is quiet, more so in the winter,it really depends what you want, but I just now a lovely small place not far from schinos called Perahora, all year round people and some non greeks, gorgeous with a stunning view down to a natural sea fed lake where we love to swim and eat at a nice taverna, not far from loutraki, mountains, and loutraki has wonderful spa baths from the mountain water, the council just built a brand new enclosure, fantastic for the health ancient sites everywhere and perahora has a sweet community,in the summer they do traditional dancing next to the lake,I met an english guy a few weeks back who has lived in loutraki many years,he is a web designer, works from home, old corinthos is nearby, people sell gorgeous fruit and veg outside their houses around there and the grapes are amazing,I think you would love perahora, its on Utube, take a look, clean air, cheap rent and I can let you use my house should you want to look around.

Thank you for the kind offer. I took a look at the you tube videos and it is very pretty. Are there also small bays rather than just one long beach? Also, do you need to go into town to find larger supermarkets or the villages have some decent ones? Is it possible to write to you directly rather than on the thread?
Many thanks

moving to greece

hi,Perahora, near the lake has a great roadside fruit and veg place all year, local produce, not sprayed and there is a shop selling olive oil from local olive growers,he presses it,you see the big vats in the shop and he makes lovely soap, when you get to know the locals you will find that many sell home grown produce, like at schinos,we buy potatoes,no pesticides used, you can see that cause they are not perfect and they have cows, you buy the milk straight from the cow and boil it they do have their injections yearly.Loutraki has a big long beach,I dont swim there, the lake is just heaven, lots of italians germans french park there with campers cause its so gorgeous, very limited building has been allowed near the lake, there are lots of coves to swim around perahora, just you need to be shown where they are, quiet and away from the madding crowd.Id move tomorrow to perahora, there is a mountain village nearby which is lovely, the whole area has been described on the net as an area of outstanding beauty, the air quality is something else,we can private message each other for further chat,I have done it before but it looks a bit changed,Ill work it out some how or maybe you can.

I'm a big fan of Halkida and I love the lifestyle there, it's a great balance between city and country life and the proximity to Athens is also a big advantage too. Based on what you've said, you could also possibly consider places like Rhodes and Corfu, as they both have international airports, though the winder there may still be a problem...

Good luck with it!
